As social as we as humans are, we often fail completely to learn from other's mistakes. It's beautiful. If we would just listen to people who have done it before and know how it ends, we could avoid so much grief, but appearently, we're wired to make our own mistakes and disregard any wisdom...
On the other hand there is just some stuff you have to experience yourself. You have to learn from your own mistakes. And while not learning from others is just human, not learning anything after personal experience is almost stupid. Although I still do. There's this whole think about habit and selective memory that makes me repeat the same stupid stuff again and again...
